Black Metal Sunday
I love the mornings that I roll out of bed and I realize what I want to hear music-wise for the day. Today has been a Black Metal day, a Black Metal day indeed. On today’s Black Metal roster was Emperor and Burzum.
Years will not diminish my love for these two bands nor will multiple listens of any of their albums. Just like any band though we have specific albums we graviate towards and of course this can change over time. The one thing about Gillian, I am constant in my affections and I have decided today to post my favorite album from each of these bands.
Album “Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise” was Emperor’s last album before hey disbanded in 2001.
This album is filled with technical and compositional complexity of dark-riffs, industrial-like sounds, double-bass, harpsichord, piano, violin, abundant guitar solos, operatic and multi-layered vocals. These essential components make this album a symphonic black metal masterpiece.
Album “Filosofem” (meaning “Philosopheme”) was Burzum’s last album before Varg was incarcerated for the murder of his bandmate and arson of several churches throughout Norway.
This album marked a change for Burzum in both production and execution. The album opens with “Dunkelheit” which is a dense wall of sound and by “Rundgang Um Die Transzendentale Saule Der Singularitat” the album turns beautifully ambient and contemplative. Just when you think the repetition is going to get stagnant the sound begins to morph. This is truly a special album and by far my favorite Burzum album.
