Holly Russell Collection on “This is Paper”
“I wanted to create a collection that showed both the tough, dark side to my aesthetic as well as the contrasting light and ethereal side of my work. I always work around the idea of using contrasting elements. I created quite masculine shapes with square shoulders and boxy shapes but softened the lines by using fluid silks in long silhouettes to create movement and add femininity. I looked at the Hollywood stars of the Golden Age such as a Rita Hayworth and Joan Crawford as I wanted the clothes to incorporate a sense of glamour when women had an elegant but powerful image.
